FTampa (Felipe Tampa) has been pushing brazilian EDM for a few years with massive tracks and Beatport Top 10’s. He started producing in 2010, and had a breakthrough year in 2013 when Hardwell played “FTampa – Kick It Hard” on Tomorrowland’s Main Stage.
Hailing from the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, we sat down with the artist now signed to Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings and got an exclusive look in the mind of the creative.
Beat Trax: When did you realize that you wanted to start making music?
FTampa: I learned to play the piano when I was 13, so, music got into my life early. At that age I was just a kid but I already had the motivation to learn and play the better I could. Before becoming a dance music producer, I used to have a rock band alongside some friends. A few years later, in 2010, I completly felt in love with electronic music production, synths and mixing. That was when my DJ side was born. But, to be honest and point out, I can say that since my childhood I knew I would make music forever.
Beat Trax: Do you feel that where you’ve lived has affected your style of music?
FTampa: Brazil is a huge country so it’s interesting how every region has it’s own style / influence. In my state, Minas Gerais, the main style is sertanejo but it didn’t affected my music because it’s very different from EDM. Take the vocals, for example, it’s quite unusual and rare to see a TOP 10 Beatport track with it’s vocals in Portuguese.
Beat Trax: Who are some artists that inspire you?
FTampa: Skrillex is one of my favorite so far. I’m listening again to lots of rock bands. Also I’m really in love with Merk & Kremont and Deorro aswell. I’m playing all their tracks.
Beat Trax: Do you enjoy producing or performing more?
FTampa: It’s always fun to be on tour, meeting new places, venues, people and artists personally as well.
I think the pleasure and enjoyment of producing and performing are complementary. If you produce an awesome track, it will be as awesome to play it live for a big crowd. You can also be happier and more satisfied with your own productios when they go worldwide, becoming a hit, gaining recognition.
Honestly, I can’t choose which I enjoy the most. I love my job so much that everything is great and makes me feel good.
Beat Trax: What is your dream gig?
FTampa: Ultra and Tomorrowland. I hope next year
Beat Trax: What’s in store for the future?
FTampa: Well I have a new track in August, a collab with my friend Hifi, a collab with Quintino in September and some secret tracks and some secret remixes! Tell you guys soon!
